The origins of Hossegor
They are neighbors and have nothing to envy, the Basque coast and the Landes are two regions with real charms that attract many holidaymakers every year, but also new inhabitants. And for good reason these two regions have something to dream about and this is also the case of the Landes town of Hossegor, a famous seaside resort a few kilometers from the Basque Country.
The village became a seaside resort at the beginning of the 20th century, attracting summer visitors from Parisian literary and artistic circles and lovers of large coastal spaces. Initially called Soorts, in 1913 the town adopted the name of its marine lake, Hossegor, and became Soorts-Hossegor.
The particularity of this town located on the Landes coast is to have two centers: Hossegor, the seaside resort and Soorts, the historic town whose history dates back to the 11th century.
Built in the purest tradition of the Landes villages, Soorts was once inhabited by fishermen, muleteers, lumberjacks and resin workers. A simple and rural life that was turned upside down one day by the emergence of the Hossegor district.
In a few years, the growing notoriety and the influx of tourists encouraged local elected officials to add the name of Hossegor to that of Soorts in 1913. The seaside resort was born in 1931. At the time, it was arts, letters and the elegant sports that will give the city its national fame. Then, it's a completely different discipline that will soon make known its hours of glory at the resort, surfing will sweep the city in 1960 and has not ceased to be emulated since.
Today, the name of Hossegor evokes in France and abroad a landmark on the world map of surfing and its golf course is among the 50 most beautiful European sites. The 1980s sounded the democratization of surfing. This is becoming a major tourist asset and beyond this tourist aspect, it is also the birth of a new sector of economic activity: the surf business.
